“Love, Simon” was apparently banned in India on the day of its planned release.

The movie, which has grown very popular worldwide for being one of the few movies to deal with teenage romance while representing the LBBTQ+ community, was supposed to premiere in Indian theaters June 1.

However, according to Gay Star News, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) banned “Love, Simon” because of its “gay content”.

Shortly after the cancellation, hashtags such as #ReleaseLoveSimoninIndia started trending on Twitter and there have been multiple petitions in an attempt to get the film unbanned.

In India, gay sexual acts are considered a criminal offense “against the order of nature” under Section 377 of the Penal Code. Generally there is little to no discussion about LGBTQ+ issues, as it is seen as a taboo subject.
