Twenty One Pilots Perform ‘The Line’ Live At 2024 Game Awards

At the 2024 Game Awards held on December 12th, Twenty One Pilots gave their latest single, The Line its live dbeut. This track is featured on the soundtrack for the second season of Netflix’s animated series, Arcane: League of Legends.

The band’s performance was part of a special Arcane medley that also included artists Royal & The Serpent with Wasteland and d4vd performing Remember Me. Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun of Twenty One Pilots took the stage accompanied by an orchestra, with visuals from the series enhancing the backdrop.

Tyler Joseph, a self-professed fan of Arcane, expressed his enthusiasm about contributing to the series:

“As a fan, when invited to be a part of Arcane, I was inspired to contribute in some way. So many aspects of this story connect with me on a creative level, and when the scene was shared, I immediately knew the lyrical concept and direction I wanted to take when writing ‘The Line.’ Josh and I are thrilled to present this song onstage for the first time during the 2024 Game Awards.”

The Story How Twenty One Pilots Joined The Arcane Season 2 Soundtrack

The second season of Arcane: League of Legends is finally out on Netflix, and fans are loving it—not just for its amazing animation and story, but also for the music. One of the big highlights is a new song by Twenty One Pilots called The Line, and the story of how it came together is pretty incredible.

Maria Egan, Riot Games’ Global Head of Music & Events, shared how the band ended up on the soundtrack. “First of all, I’m just a fan,” she said. It all started with a scene in Arcane. The team had a rough version of the scene with a placeholder song attached to it. As soon as Egan heard it, she knew who needed to write the real song. “The moment was designed for this band,” she explained, saying Tyler Joseph was the perfect fit.

The next step was reaching out to the band’s manager, Chris Woltman. “We knew Tyler was a fan of the show, and they wanted to do something with us. I just said, ‘Look, we have the perfect scene for him. Would he consider doing it?’” While Tyler rarely writes for outside projects, he was excited about this one. The result? “Literally three days after he got the scene, we got the song back,” Egan revealed.

What made this collaboration special is that it felt effortless. Usually, the team tests a few different songs from various artists to find the right vibe. But with Twenty One Pilots, it was clear immediately. “When that one came in, it was like, ‘Okay, well, that’s it,’” Egan said.

Egan also praised how much Tyler loves Arcane, saying it helped make the song feel even more connected to the story. “He really loves the show, so he was so into being part of the world and trying to tell the story.” She also called him “an exceptional songwriter” who can write lyrics that tell a story while also connecting with listeners who don’t know the show.

Season 2 of Arcane: League of Legends is streaming now on Netflix!
