‘Sex Education’ Star Emma Mackey Is Leaving The Show
Emma Mackey, who plays Maeve Wiley on the hit Netflix series Sex Education, will be leaving the show after the upcoming fourth season. This came to light in a recent statement by the actress, when attending the BAFTA Awards where she won the Rising Star award
“Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week!” she told RadioTimes. “No, I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”
Before starting production of the fourth season, the actress said she will not appear in it as frequently:
“It feels very familiar! And it’s a bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So there’s… I’m not in it as consistently.
But we’re in the middle of filming now, and I’m excited to be back. And yeah, I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen – because I also don’t know. I’m also finding out as we go along, so it’ll be fun!”
Mackey’s announcement follows the same statement Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric Effiong, made a couple of weeks ago.
“Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength,” he shared in an Instagram post.
While the news of Mackey‘s departure is sure to disappoint fans, it is not uncommon for actors to leave popular shows in order to pursue other opportunities or to explore new creative projects. Mackey has already begun to branch out into other roles, with upcoming appearances in the movie Barbie, which will also see Ncuti Gatwa star in it.
Of course, nothing official has been revealed about a potential season 5, as we don’t even know when season 4 will be releasing.
