CONCERT REVIEW: Yungblud Brings The Heat To Sold Out Amsterdam Show
After a long wait, the moment finally arrived this weekend: Yungblud was back in town, with the incredible duo Nova Twins as the support act for the evening. In a sold-out AFAS LIVE, 6000 fans were highly anticipating tonight’s proceedings, with a portion of the fans already queueing in front of the venue very early in the morning.
The british duo Nova Twins, with their brand new album SUPERNOVA on the schedule to release on the 17th of June already gave us a taste of what’s to come in the form of the singles Antagonist, Cleopatra & K.M.B. Amy Love and Georgia South must have been familiar to many fans in the room, as the room was ecstatic as could be. The duo got the crowd going exceptionally well with both the new singles, as well as the older ones like the popular Taxi. Besides being a band on the rise, South and Love also design all of their own stage clothes, which you can admire in the gallery below!
After half an hour, it was time for Yungblud. The lights went out, but Yungblud didn’t arrive for a few minutes after that, while the AFAS LIVE listened to a speech blasting through the speakers. After a couple of minutes, the curtain dropped and Yungblud and his bandmates appeared on stage, kicking things off with strawberry lipstick, from Yungblud’s second and most recent album weird!, which set the tone for the entire evening.
strawberry lipstick was quickly followed by fan favourite parents and superdeadfriends, as well as recent single The Funeral. Yungblud describes his music as a complete explosion of uncensored expression, and the same can be said for Yungblud’s fans. The audience was as diverse as can be, with many pride flags and numerous adaptations being worn and waved by the fans.
One single after the other echoed through the room, while Yungblud jumped and danced around the stage with an amount of energy previously thought of as unreachable for humans. During the majority of the songs, pyro was used quite generously, giving the choruses some extra strength. To make sure the fans in the front rows stayed hydrated through the heat, a lot of water was provided.
In-between songs, Yungblud would often speak to the audience about being yourself, uncensored expression and much more, which to me personally took a bit too big of a portion from the show, but hey, to each their own! The setlist was a nice mix of songs from the discography, as well as a cover of MGK‘s I Think I’m OKAY, which on the studio version also features Yungblud.
Overall, Yungblud‘s show was exceptional. The energy was unmatched from both the band and the audience, which extends to Nova Twins as well. The engagement with the audience made for very entertaining banter and we cannot wait for Yungblud to return, perhaps on the album cycle surrounding his third album, which is coming later this year. Eva van den Bosch captured both sets through her lens. You can see what the show looked like via the galleries below.

Interview: What Can We Expect From New Album ‘Supernova’ More With Nova Twins
We had the pleasure to sit down with both members of the groundbreaking band Nova Twins. Georgia South and Amy Love discussed all things Supernova with us, the highly anticipated new album that will (finally) return on the 17th of June. Besides the new album, we discussed their clothing-making, collaborations and their recent tour with Yungblud. Check it out!
First and foremost, how are you guys doing today? Amy: We’re marvellous! We’re in Amsterdam for the first time. Georgia: We have always been excited about coming to Amsterdam, cause we always heard it was the best city so we were ready to explore!
How has the tour been so far? Amy: Oh my god, it’s been the best tour, his (Yungblud) audience is so up for seeing new music, every night there’s cheering and jumping and getting evolved. Sometimes with the support act, people don’t know what to expect and you have to win them over, but I feel like the Yungblud audience, they are welcome from the get-go. It’s really nice. Georgia: So far, we have gotten lucky with the tours that we have been on. There’s always been a really good match, but this one is exceptional.
Congratulations on the new album that’s coming out, Supernova. There is a bunch of stuff going on on the cover. Can you elaborate on how that came to be? |Georgia: We named the album after the album cover was done and the album was written, naming it was the last thing that we were stuck on. But we wanted to create a world, a planet that was other-worldly. Amy: We wanted to create our own bubble and if there was a bubble, it would look like that. Taking you out of the shit and chaos of everyday life and trying to put something else around it and exist in that fantasy land. It is. areal place, but just in our heads, haha. Georgia: The armour on us is to symbolize the strength that we get from that world.
Did you create the world first or the songs first? Both: Songs came first! Amy: All the artwork and the name came after the songs. We were just writing what we were feeling and making music throughout the lockdown. And then we wanted to see, what did it look like? What did it sound like as a body of work? What colour was it? So we couldn’t think of it first, it had to come after.
It’s been a crazy period of time, but what was the most memorable and positive experience of creating the record? Amy: The triumph we felt in a time where we were doing nothing and it was chaos, that when we wrote these songs and we got to the end of it, we were just so happy about what we were creating and what we loved and it just gave us a new lease of life. Throughout the lockdown, it was great sending ideas back and forth, but the first song we write when we got out of lockdown and wrote in the same room was Antagonist, and we just had so much fun with our boards out and jamming. The jam at the end of that song is what we just wrote there and we wanted to leave it in because it was just us having fun after such a turbulent time. So that’s a really good memory. Georgia: Passing the ideas throughout lockdown, it was like our own little world. Like how pigeons send notes across, haha.
Do you feel like you had more time for this record? Georgia: With the first one, no one knew it was coming so we could just write. But with this one, we also got lucky with time.
We saw that you sew your own clothes for shows and have your own brand, how is that going? Amy: Everyone talks about our brand, but it does not really exist yet. We haven’t sold anything lately because it’s more about the clothes that we are wearing in our music videos and during shows. We have been so busy with that, that we haven’t had a chance to launch it yet, but we will!
Is there something that you’re hoping to achieve on this cycle, that you haven’t been able to before? Georgia: Just to continue spreading the message that you can be totally yourself and you are included in this scene whatever you look like or who you love. We’re starting to see our crowds on tours and it just amazing to see how diverse it is. So if this album has a wider reach, we love to just keep growing our community. Amy: We’ve got this song Choose Your Fighter on the upcoming record and it is a dream of us to get it in a game. It is such a game song and it would be so much fun.
Any specific game in mind? Georgia: Call Of Duty, Tekken, any fighting game. Amy: Or, if not a game, then an action movie!
Do you have a personal favourite on the record, and why? Amy: That’s so hard because a lot of them are so different. But if I could pick two, at the moment because of my mood, it would be A Dark Place For Somewhere Beautiful and Fire & Ice. I love playing them and it makes me feel good. Georgia: For me as well, and I have been loving Choose Your Fighter lately. We snuck it into our set this tour and it was fun! So we can’t wait for that to come out.
What was it like working with Bring Me The Horizon? Amy: It was great! It was in lockdown, so we didn’t work in the studio. Oli (Sykes) DM’ed us on Instagram and we loved it. We recorded it in a home studio and that was it. Then we went on tour and we played it every night, live, to an arena full of thousands of people. Georgia: The tour was the first time we met them in person. We face-timed with Oli, but meeting them and doing the shows, it was crazy. They are so lovely.
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their career as a musician? Amy: Don’t take any shortcuts. In the end, it won’t benefit you in terms of your growth, Play all the crap shows and don’t feel like you have to do it in a small amount of time. There is no rush, just take your time and enjoy what you do. Give yourself time to work out what it is you want to do. You can’t build up self-confidence if you don’t what it is that you’re putting out there. So make sure it is always your vision. Georgia: Don’t try and be somebody else. It’s easy to copy someone, but try and scrap that and think about what your sound is and what you can bring different into the world.

INTERVIEW: Everything F.E.A.R., Touring & More With Stand Atlantic’s Bonnie Fraser
We feel very fortunate to have been able to digitally sit down with Stand Atlantic vocalist Bonnie Fraser to discuss numerous topics, including but not limited to their brand new album f.e.a.r., touring and staying sane throughout the pandemic. Check out the conversation we had right below!
Thank you so much for taking the time and congratulations on the new album! How have you experienced the response so far? It’s been really really good. The only negative thing I’ve read so far is that someone tweeted “I like the new Stand Atlantic album but there are too many swear words” and I just replied “nah fuck it”.
But the response has been really good. We have all been really happy and really surprised at the same time, it’s cool.
Other than the swear words, the music itself is also a bit heavier than your previous music. Was that by accident or are you more into the heavier music right now? We’ve always been into heavy stuff throughout our lives, but mostly it was just the mindset I was in. I was so angry and frustrated and that’s the way it came out. We didn’t know, with the whole pandemic thing, if the world was ever gonna go back to normal. So we wrote the album as if it was our last record, doing everything we wanted to do. That’s why it’s so diverse. We were just trying everything and we had the time to experiment a lot more.
It must be very nice to be on the other side of the world and playing shows again. Yeah, of course. I’m glad it’s not our first tour back, though. We did a tour in January and February, so it’s nice that we had a bit of a break and now it’s good to be back on the road again, which is what we love to do.
About the time between your albums, first one released in 2018, then 2020 and now 2022, is that something that you strive for, 2 years between? It’s mostly a schedule thing, each album has its own life span that you can tour and promote before people start getting bored and asking for the next shit. In the past, we were touring so much, so we only had limited time to write. But during the pandemic, we actually had a lot of time to write and we had more time to experiment.
With the pandemic, everything’s been very negative. What is your most positive experience from the creation of this album? Spending time with Stevie Knight, our producer. I stayed at his place for 7 weeks, writing the thing and we were just laughing and having a good time. That is also why I wanted to put some voice memos on the album. It was nice to do a thing that makes both of us feel really good and accomplished and be in each other’s company. That was the highlight for me.
The artwork is a lot of fun, there is so much going on. Can you tell us a little bit about how it came to be? I can’t remember when we even started working on the artwork, I don’t think that all the songs were written at that point. We definitely just wanted to do something different. I was scrolling Instagram, trying to find inspiration for what kind of style we wanted. There was this guy, I think his name was Dan, he does a lot of collage work and he was very much in the zone of what I was thinking, We got into creating an image of hell. In the record, there are a lot of references to that sorta thing and the devil and shit like that. Once we had that sorted, we tried to add mini things that represented a lot of the songs. There’s a picture of Van Gogh and he is crying and has no ear and the devil is actually holding his ear. There’s even a little molotov cocktail in there. I just like the bright colors. It just took ages, finding out what you want, then finding someone who can do it. It’s a lot of back and forth and changing things. You want to get it right. You don’t want random artwork that doesn’t make any sense.
There are a lot of fun collaborations on the record. We’re guessing that was a little bit different because of the pandemic. Yeah, the pandemic didn’t halt the collabs. Every song we have a collaboration on, the full song was written and when people come one, they either write their own verse or sing the one that was already written. I also hadn’t met any of these people in real life. Recently we met Royal & the Serpent, that was really cool, but Tom The Mail Man and nothing, nowhere., still haven’t met them in real life, which is crazy to think. But I like that it was pretty different for us. We’ve only collaborated with Hannah Hermione Greenwood from Creeper on our first album so far, which was so sick.
So, having three on this record was really cool. I enjoyed it!
We didn’t want people who were already doing the same thing we were doing, but people from the outside. To show that it’s okay to have other genres of people on your shit.
Are there any artists that you’d really like to release a song with? No, I don’t have any goals like that. There are always so many new artists popping up and there are so many artists currently doing sick stuff. Anyone that’s talented and that we respect, I would be down to do something with. Maybe I should start setting some goals! But for now, it’s all chill. Just people that are creative and can add something cool to the track.
You’ve made huge waves with every record. I there anything that you hope to achieve on this current cycle that you haven’t been able to before?I feel like every band kind of wants the same thing, you want to chart in a certain country or get this many Spotify listeners or whatever. For us, we don’t really set a goal. We know where we’re at and as long as we’re breaking that and showing growth, that’s all we care about. The fact that we got the opportunities we have on this record, it blows us away. We can’t believe it that people think we’re a real band. We are just happy to be here and want to make the best music we can. It already takes us around the world, doing what we love and the fact that other people are starting to see that and to see that we take this seriously, even though we’re a bunch of fucking nerds.. having the respect of your peers, it is just comforting and nice and gratifying.
We just want to make sure that people stay, even though we change the way we sound. Keeping people that were there from the start, but also getting new people to listen, all while still trying to make good songs.
Do you have a personal favourite on the record? It used to be hair out, but as soon as songs come out as singles, they are not my favourite anymore, because it belongs to everyone else now. So now it’s bloodclot, cause it’s the most personal song on the record, so it has a special place in my heart. It is also the closest thing on the record to a ballad.
Since the album came out on the first day of this leg of your tour, how did you decide on the setlist? We were worried because we opened with a song that isn’t a single, but is on the new record, doomsday. So we were thinking “Should we open with that because people might not know it.” It was such a weird balance trying to figure out what new songs to put on the setlist. We were thinking about that first show and how people were not going to know the new stuff. But now we’re thinking about how we still have the rest of the tour while the album is out, so maybe we should put more new songs on the setlist. But we’ve got a healthy mix of old and new now.
As a band who’s had 3 records under their belt now, what is one piece of advice for artists who are just starting out? I don’t know, because every band has a different story of what they consider helped them reach success. But for us, I would say write good songs with people you trust, and focus on songwriting because at the end of the day the music will speak for itself. If the music is really good, people will notice that.
Be true to yourself, don’t think you have to fit a certain mould or an image that doesn’t feel like you. Take a minute and think about what you actually want. I feel I have succumbed to that kind of pressure of what people expect of me or what I should be. People that don’t even know me. It took me a while to realize that.
So just be yourself and don’t be a fuckwit either. People will talk about that and who wants to be that? Surround yourself with people that you really respect and who know you and respect you and love you for who you are.
What is on your playlist right now? Nothing! I can’t listen to music anymore. I do like the new Turnstile record, as did everyone else on the fucking planet. But I don’t listen a lot to music right now because I feel like I listen to it every day of my fucking life. So I feel like I am overcritical of it and I don’t want to be like that. I really love Frank Ocean, he’s a fucking god.
f.e.a.r. is out now. Stream it below and catch Stand Atlantic on the road!
