what's happening with Rammstein
Rammstein @ Stadspark, Groningen

CONCERT REVIEW: Rammstein Are Phenomenal In Front Of 55.000 Fans In Groningen

It’s been a busy week for Rammstein and all parties involved with the two massive Groningen shows. The media has been a whirlwind since the allegations surrounding Rammstein vocalist Till Lindemann surfaced, and a local environmentalist group piled on, accusing the band’s performance of causing excessive noise pollution and their usage of pyro-technics harm to the environment. Both these procedures took place the same week as the event, with the judge’s ruling on the noise pollution, giving the green light for the concert to take place, coming a literal hour before Groningen Stadspark opened the gates for the early fans.

Rammstein, the iconic German industrial metal band, has long been renowned for their explosive and theatrical live shows. Their unyielding commitment to delivering a jaw-dropping experience has garnered them a global reputation as masters of stagecraft and special effects. Last night, we witnessed the contested Rammstein show in Groningen alongside 55.000 fans, exploring their mesmerizing special effects and ingenious gimmicks that left the audience in awe.

Personally, we have never been to a Rammstein show before, but having seen footage for years on social media, it sure does look like Rammstein’s set and gimmicks have been the same for years now. While this might be repetitive for the fans who attend every year, for us it was a first, and thus it is needless to say that we were blown away by the sheer spectacle of it all. The set is an industrial marvel, resembling a dystopian landscape fused with a twisted carnival. Towering structures adorned with towering flames, metal grates, and mechanical contraptions create an atmosphere of raw energy and aggression.

As the band takes the stage, the audience is instantly captivated by the visual spectacle. Rammstein’s pyrotechnics are legendary and for good reason. From towering infernos to intricate firework displays, every explosion is perfectly choreographed to enhance the music and evoke a primal reaction. Sheets of flame jetting skywards, pillars of fire surrounding the band members, and flamethrowers strapped to their bodies—all these elements come together to create an intense and scorching atmosphere.

The many visual elements in Rammstein’s live performances showcase their mastery over stagecraft and transport the audience into a realm of darkness. From setting a steel cradle on fire to vocalist Till Lindemann tending to a big cauldron, ending up ablaze from which later one of the musicians erupts, every aspect of their performance is meticulously planned and executed. Another highlight for us was the start of the 2nd encore, where Rammstein played the self-titled track Rammstein. Frontman Till Lindemann emerged from the stage wearing a device on his back spewing flames on numerous occasions throughout the song, something you will be able to see in the gallery below. These theatrical elements not only add to the overall experience of a Rammstein concert but have played a substantial role in the band’s iconic image.

Beyond the visual grandeur, Rammstein’s live performance boasts exceptional sound quality and precision. The band’s vocal style, characteristic of their German origins, adds a unique flavour to their music. The deep and powerful vocals of lead singer Till Lindemann resonate with a sense of strength and authority, further immersing the audience in the band’s raw and intense energy. With a star-studded setlist that spans their entire discography, of course including the massive hits Du Hast, Deutschland, Sonne and Engel, Rammstein delivers each song with an accompanying spectacle and excellent musicianship.

I can imagine being a fan and seeing the same show throughout the years can become a bit predictable, but even then, seeing this on an annual basis does not sound too bad. Rammstein’s live performances are legendary and for good reason. The band’s ability to seamlessly blend their explosive sound with innovative and jaw-dropping stagecraft elevates their live shows to the realm of pure spectacle. Get a glimpse of what the show looked like by checking out the photo gallery below.

what's happening with Spiritbox
Spiritbox @ Patronaat, Haarlem 2023

CONCERT REVIEW: Spiritbox (Holy) Rolls Through Haarlem For Sold-Out Show

After playing a lot of festivals in Europe, it was time for Spiritbox to play some headliner shows, from which two of them were in The Netherlands. The first of those two shows was in a sold-out Patronaat in Haarlem, with the second one taking place the day after in Eindhoven, where the band will play in front of yet another sold-out crowd in Effenaar.

Still riding the wave of their popular release Eternal Blue, Spiritbox have only built on it with the releases of their 2022 EP Rotoscope and the brand new single The Void, which has also garnered significant attention and praise. Now before we get into the actual show, I do want to note that the merch was very expensive, with t-shirts costing 40 euros, something we generally only see in big arenas from bands like KISS and Slipknot. I am fairly certain this is not due to the band itself, but due to the rising expenses for touring the globe and Europe specifically, but it is getting a bit out of hand. In today’s rapidly changing world, the rising expenses for touring and live events have become a significant challenge for both artists and fans.

Now onto better and brighter things, the actual show itself. Spiritbox are an exceptional live band and delivered live renditions of songs that only added to the studio versions, showcasing the band’s impeccable musicianship and skill. One of the things that instantly stood out was, not only was Courtney LaPlante’s voice impeccable, as her range effortlessly transitioned from hauntingly beautiful melodies to guttural growls, showcasing her incredible vocal prowess, bassist and backup vocalist Josh Gilbert also displayed impressive talent and harmonized vocals that really added depth to the performance.

The visual production of the show was equally impressive, enhancing the immersive experience. The interplay of vibrant lights, albeit a bit bright, blinding some fans who had a light directed at their face, and the band’s intense stage presence added another layer of depth to the performance, further immersing the audience in the world of Eternal Blue.

Throughout the evening, Spiritbox masterfully weaved together tracks from Eternal Blue, combined with 2 songs from Rotoscope: Rotoscope and Hysteria, the older track Rule of Nines and the brand new The Void. Each song was a sonic tapestry that showcased their growth as artists. The dynamic shifts within songs like the fan favourite heavy-hitter Holy Roller to the more calm and serene Secret Garden were executed flawlessly, leaving the crowd in awe of the band’s ability to seamlessly transition between heavy, atmospheric, and melodic passages.

Throughout the set, LaPlante chatted with the crowd, saying she was happy to be playing a headliner show instead of a festival tonight, as festival sets don’t leave a lot of room for chatter. This interaction with the audience created a sense of intimacy and connection between the band and their fans, fostering a memorable and personal experience for everyone present. With the immense growth that the band is currently enjoying, this intimate setting could soon be replaced by semi-arena shows with higher production value.

One standout moment was the emotionally charged performance of Constance, which lyrically weights heavy on the soul, but as LaPlante shared, having played it in front of so many crowds, and seeing the joyful reaction to it, the performance of it has turned into a cathartic and joyous occasion. The hauntingly beautiful ballad took on a whole new level of intensity when performed live and gave the fans a breather from the heavy songs that preceded it.

Spiritbox have been on the rise ever since the release of Holy Roller and seeing them live makes you understand why they have garnered such a devoted fanbase. The songs are stellar and the live performance captures the essence and energy of their music in a way that transcends simply listening to their tracks. Seeing Spiritbox should be on your bucket list if you haven’t seen them already. Check out some photos from the performance in the gallery below.

JERA ON AIR: The Ghost Inside, Motionless In White & More Close Out Last Day

Time flies when you’re having fun, and as a result, we have already arrived at the third and last day of this year’s Jera On Air. The final day of a festival is always bittersweet, as it means that ‘normal life’ is right around the corner, but luckily there were some bands on the docket together to make this last day great.

THE MENZINGERS:

Time flies when you’re having fun, and as a result, we have already arrived at the third and last day of this year’s Jera On Air. The final day of a festival is always bittersweet, as it means that ‘normal life’ is right around the corner, but luckily there were some bands on the docket together to make this last day great.

After seeing the crowd during LANDMVRKS take stage diving to the next level, with one person literally surfing on top of another person while on the hands of the crowd, we went down to the Vulture stage to witness The Menzingers live. For those unfamiliar, The Menzingers are an American punk rock band known for their energetic and heartfelt music. Their sound can be described as a blend of punk, pop punk, and indie rock, with elements of folk and Americana woven into their songs. We went in completely blank and left as fans of the band, as their melodies were catchy and the lyrics storytelling-gold. They have a knack for crafting hooks that stick in your head and lyrics that resonate with listeners on an emotional level and we are here for it. Check out some of the photos made during the set and make sure to check them out if you haven’t already.

ENTER SHIKARI:

Next up were the always exciting to witness Enter Shikari, playing the mainstage for the eagerly awaiting crowd. Enter Shikari shows are known for their interactive nature, with frontman Rou Reynolds frequently engaging with the crowd. The visual aspect of an Enter Shikari show is also an integral part of the experience. The band incorporates vibrant lighting, mesmerizing visuals, and thought-provoking imagery to enhance the overall impact of their performance, this time paired with pyrotechnics and confetti cannons. The energy and excitement that Enter Shikari brought to the stage was palpable, as they delivered a set filled with their signature blend of post-hardcore of all eras of the band. New songs like (pls) set me on fire and familiar, older hits like Labyrinth & Arguing With Thermometers had the crowd ecstatically singing along and moshing with exhilaration. Due to the limited time that the band had on stage, and the many fan favourites throughout the years, Enter Shikari mixed 4 of their songs into 1 remix in, what they called the quickfire round’. The songs that were part of the quickfire round today were Havoc B, Bull, The Last Garrison & the very popular Sorry, You’re Not a Winner. Enter Shikari never disappoint, and today was no exception. Luckily for all of us, they are returning to The Netherlands in February of next year for their biggest headliner show to date. Tickets can be found here.

MOTIONLESS IN WHITE:

Seeing Motionless In White live is always a treat and their Jera On Air performance was no exception! The band’s raging energy combined with their haunting melodies and the bewitching spectacle that is their slightly creepy make-up made for a packed tent with people even spilling out, surrounding the outside. The band kicked off their set with Disguise’s title track, immediately captivating the audience and setting the tone for the rest of the show. The latest album Scoring The End Of The World was highly represented with a total of five tracks, including the title track, the aggressive and anthemic Slaughterhouse and Werewolf.

THE GHOST INSIDE:

Closing out the Vulture stage, for some considered to be one of the headliners of the night (including us), was the highly anticipated performance from The Ghost Inside. From moment one onwards, the crowd was captivated by The Ghost Inside’s raw energy and emotional intensity, with half the tent being a non-stop moshpit.

What made this performance truly special, however, was the profound sense of unity and resilience that emanated from the stage. The Ghost Inside’s triumphant return to the stage after their tragic accident was met with overwhelming support, and their gratitude was palpable. Throughout the set, the band members shared heartfelt stories and expressed their appreciation for the fans who stood by them during their darkest times. They radiated strength and determination, delivering their powerful blend of metalcore with a newfound level of conviction. It was truly a remarkable experience witnessing The Ghost Inside’s resilience and the unwavering support of their fans and we hope this sense comes through in the photos in the gallery below.
