Green Day-Inspired Comedy ‘New Years Rev’ Announced
Green Day fans have a new reason to celebrate: the iconic punk rock band is diving into the film industry with a comedy inspired by their early days. Titled New Years Rev, the movie is currently in production, with all three band members, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool, serving as producers.
Directed by Lee Kirk, known for his collaboration with Armstrong on 2016’s Ordinary World, the film follows three friends who mistakenly believe they’re set to open for Green Day at a New Year’s Eve concert in Los Angeles. This misconception propels them into a wild, cross-country adventure reminiscent of Green Day‘s own early touring experiences.
The cast features Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust as the trio of aspiring musicians. Joining them are The Office alumni Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, along with Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Keen Ruffalo.
Reflecting on the band’s formative years, Billie Joe Armstrong shared, “Van days rule. You will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement… But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family, and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known.”
While a release date for New Years Rev hasn’t been announced yet, the film promises to capture the essence of youthful ambition and the unpredictable journey of chasing a dream—themes that resonate deeply with Green Day‘s legacy.
